I found the following on a Mormon website (http://mormon.org/beliefs/articles-of-faith) and thought it might be interesting to compare the first four Articles (doctrinal) with what the Bible says. Here is what I found:
1. We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
On the surface, this looks like the same that Christians believe. However, a bit of research shows that Mormons have a completely different view of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
God: “God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens…”(Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345)
Jesus: “The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action”. (Mormon Doctrine, by Bruce McConkie, p. 547).
Holy Ghost: “He [the Holy Ghost] is a being endowed with the attributes and powers of Deity, and not a mere force, or essence,” (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 144).
God: (Gen 1:1 [KJV]) In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (Gen 1:27 [KJV]) So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Jesus: (John 1:1 [KJV]) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:14 [KJV]) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (John 1:17 [KJV]) For the law was given by Moses, [but] grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Holy Ghost: (Acts 2:4 [KJV]) And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, … (Luke 1:15 [KJV]) …and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb. (Luke 1:41 [KJV]) And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.
3. We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
Mormonism believes that man’s sin is a result of individual action and they believe in Salvation through a system of works ;
“As these sins are the result of individual acts it is just that forgiveness for them should be conditioned on individual compliance with prescribed requirements — ‘obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel,'” (Articles of Faith, p. 79).
The Bible: (Rom 5:12 [KJV]) Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
4. We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Again; a ‘works’ salvation leaving out all mention of God’s grace.
The Bible: (Rom 10:9 [KJV]) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Repent
(Eph 2:8 [KJV]) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: (Eph 2:9 [KJV]) Not of works, lest any man should boast.
