This begs the question: “Should we punish killing with more killing?” Hasan will most probably be sentenced to be executed but is this the best sentence?
According to the Bible, we are not to kill (murder) and many of our states have already outlawed the practice, my state -Maryland- being one of those. I am on the fence when it comes to the death penalty. On the one hand, I do not believe that our justice system is perfect and unless someone is caught red-handed (as was Hasan) there is always the slim chance that we might put an innocent person to death. On the other hand, our penal system is not perfect and other than being confined, there isn’t a lot of “punishment” in going to jail for life. Prisoners get TV, Internet, free food and lodging, free schooling (through college level), and more.
Were I in charge, there would be no death penalty but prisoners would have to work eight hours per day, (road gangs, or other state jobs) 5-6 days a week to pay for food and lodging, TV subscription, etc. Maybe one or two hours of TV per day, no internet, no taxpayer funded schooling (other than highschool) and more. In other words, make prison a REAL punishment.
Baring that, I would have to agree with the death penalty for those caught in the act, but not others. What is your opinion. Do you agree with the death penalty or not?
