This got me to thinking. I’ve been a Christian for over 40 years but no one in his right mind would consider me an “expert” on the Bible. And I must admit it boils down to one thing. Lack of proper bible study.
I say ‘proper’ because over the years I’ve read the bible, studied the bible and even taught the bible but always in a hod-pog manner. I would read a bit here and there, study portions for Sunday school, etc. but I’ve never been a good student nor have I had the discipline to properly and continually, study the bible, book by book.
After reading the above quote, I decided that 2014 would be the year I made a concerted effort to learn and KNOW at least one book of the bible. By this, I mean that I want to know the book well enough that I can take those truths and 1.) apply them to my life and 2.) teach others to do the same. To this end, I’m, praying for and asking your prayers for the discipline to read at least 30 minutes, twice a day, either the book I choose or a commentary, sermon or other study on that book.
While trying to decide which book to study, I ran across this video by Dr. Bob Utley, a baptist teacher and author. It’s an hour long but well worth listening to. He give s some good insights into hermeneutics (interpretation of biblical texts) and how to understand the bible.
